Brandi Chastain (2010)

Brandi Denise Chastain (born July 21, 1968 in San José , California ) is a former American soccer player .

Career

Together with Mia Hamm , Joy Fawcett , Julie Foudy and Kristine Lilly, Chastain is one of the five US players who participated in the great successes of the US national team from the 1991 World Cup to the 2004 Olympic Games (two Olympic victories and two world championship titles) . In contrast to the others, she was not in the squad all the time and was - also due to injuries - not always a regular player, so that she "only" made 192 internationals . She scored 30 goals, being the first US player to score five goals in one game on April 18, 1991.

Chastain, who was initially used as a striker, began her international career in the 5-2 win on June 1, 1988 against Japan . In 1991 she became world champion with the national team. In 1993 she was no longer in the squad, but was again in the squad at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta - now as a defender - and won the gold medal with her team. In February 1999, on the occasion of the group draw for the 1999 World Cup, she played with the national team against a FIFA World Cup. The game does not count as an official international match. At the World Cup she was again world champion with the USA after converting the decisive penalty in the penalty shoot-out against the People's Republic of China . In 2001 she was one of the founders and co-owners of WUSA . At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, she and her team repeated the victory in Atlanta.

After the Olympic Games, the USA team organized a tour ( Fan Celebration Tour ) with 10 friendly matches, with which Hamm, Fawcett and Foudy ended their careers, while Chastain and Lilly wanted to continue playing. However, the new coach of the US national team Greg Ryan said that he no longer plans with Chastain, so that the last game of the Fan Celebration Tour on December 8, 2004 was their last international match.

The sports bra and the consequences

Due to the World Cup final in 1999, Chastain is probably one of the best-known and most frequently depicted soccer players. After converting the fifth and decisive penalty in the final, she took off her jersey and knelt on the field in a black sports bra. The photo made it into the cover of TIME , Newsweek , People and Sports Illustrated . This gave Chastain a lucrative contract with Nike . Both their website and their autobiography bear the title It's Not About the Bra ( It's not about the bra ).
