Núñez was already a member of the Uruguayan squad put together by national coach Víctor Púa at the 1999 Copa America . In the course of the tournament, which ended Uruguay after a final defeat against Brazil as runner-up South American champions, he was only a substitute goalkeeper without playing time. He then made his debut on November 17, 1999 in the 0-1 home defeat in the friendly international game against the Paraguayan selection in the Uruguayan senior team , when he was ordered to the starting line-up by Daniel Passarella , Púa's successor as coach. However, this was his only international appearance in his career.
