history
Location of the stadium in the Valle del Cauca |
Construction of the Estadio Olímpico Pascual Guerrero began in 1935 and took two years, so the stadium was completed in 1937. The newly built arena was given the name Estadio Departement . To mark the inauguration of the stadium, a tournament was held that consisted of the national teams of Colombia , Argentina , Cuba and Mexico . In 1948 the first professional football game took place in the Estadio Olímpico Pascual Guerrero, named after its architect. In 1954 the stadium was expanded in preparation for the national youth championships that took place in Cali that year. In addition, some attractions such as a swimming pool have been added. With the award of the Pan American Games in 1967 to Cali, the Estadio Olímpico Pascual Guerrero was rebuilt and expanded again. Facilities for running and throwing competitions as well as long jump were created so that the stadium could have an Olympic character. The arena now already had the audience capacity it had until recently, which was just over 45,000. When Colombia was able to secure the hosting of the U-20 World Cup in 2011 , some modernization work had to be carried out in the Estadio Olímpico Pascual Guerrero. These included, for example, the improvement of the changing rooms, the construction of an underground car park under the south stand, the construction of a screen on the north stand and the reduction of the capacity to 33,130 spectators.
For a long time, the Estadio Olímpico Pascual Guerrero was used as a venue for home games by both of the major football clubs from Cali . With the 2010/11 season, Deportivo Cali moved to a new stadium , leaving only the other football club to play their home games in the old stadium. América de Cali is one of the most successful Colombian clubs ever, having won the championship thirteen times. In addition to winning the Copa Merconorte in 2001, America is also considered the unlucky Copa Libertadores . Four times you reached the final of the most important football competition for club teams in South America , but failed each time, from 1985 to 1987 even three times in a row. For the final first leg of the Copa Libertadores 1987 between América de Cali and the Uruguayan representative CA Peñarol , which America won 2-0, 65,000 spectators came to the Estadio Olímpico Pascual Guerrero, which was one of the largest spectator numbers in this stadium.
