history
Location of the stadium in Atlántico |
The stadium was built from 1932 and inaugurated in 1934 under the name Estadio Municipal . The stadium's façade, which is still standing today, was built in the Art Deco style. At the Central American and Caribbean Games in 1946, the stadium was one of the competition venues. Since the beginning of the Colombian football championship in 1948 , the stadium was used by Atlético Junior as home stadium, which only moved out in 1986 after the completion of the larger and more modern stadium Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez . Other clubs from Barranquilla used and still use the stadium as their home stadium: Deportivo Barranquilla (1949), Sporting de Barranquilla (1950–1953 and 1988–1991), Libertad de Barranquilla (1956), Deportivo Unicosta (1995–1999) and, since 2005, Barranquilla FC .
The stadium was declared a national monument in 1994 and has been protected from demolition ever since.
From 2014 to 2018, the stadium was extensively renovated and modernized and reopened in the course of the Central American and Caribbean Games in 2018. After the renovation, the stadium will seat 11,000 spectators. The mobile south stand is the only standing stand with a capacity of 2400 spectators. The grandstands have a capacity of 2500 (west), 2612 (east) and 3464 (north) spectators. With a playing area of 70 × 105 meters, the modernized stadium complies with FIFA regulations. The renovation was overseen by the architect Giancarlo Mazzanti and cost 48 billion COP .
The new opening after four years of renovation took place on April 28, 2018 with a friendly game in which well-known former professional footballers from Colombia and other countries took part.
