The Estadio Jaime Morón León in Cartagena , a city of just under one million people in northern Colombia , was built in 1958. Just two years after the stadium was completed, Colombia's national junior athletics championships took place here. Later, the Cartagena stadium was also the venue for important competitions two more times. In 2006, the 20th Central American and Caribbean Games took place in the Estadio Jaime Morón León from July 15 to 30, 2006. The most successful nation was Cuba with almost 1,500 gold medals, over 700 silver and around 550 bronze medals. Five years later, the Estadio Jaime Morón León hosted a total of five games of the 2011 U-20 World Cup , including the quarter-final between Portugal and Argentina (5-4 on penalties). At the tournament, the stadium was the smallest, it was approved for 16,068 spectators. Despite the small capacity, the sports facility was not sold out once during the tournament; more than 16,000 spectators were present twice.

Since 1971, the Estadio Jaime Morón León has been used by the Real Cartagena football club as a venue for home football matches. The greatest success of the club is probably the Colombian runner-up in the Campeonato Finalización 2005, only to Deportivo Cali they had to admit defeat in the final. Furthermore, Real Cartagena won the championship in Colombia's second division, the Categoría Primera B, twice in 1999 and 2004 . Real Cartagena is currently playing in the second division.
