history
Location of the stadium in Quindío |
At the opening of the stadium on March 30, 1988, Colombia played against Canada (3-0). A year later in February, on the occasion of the city's 100th anniversary, a football tournament between the teams from Colombia, Chile , Peru and the U19 team from Colombia took place. Four of the six games were played in the Centenario de Armenia and Colombia won the tournament after three wins. Both the main and the opposite stands of the stadium are covered and it has an athletics facility . On January 25, 1999, an earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale struck the city. Then the system had to be renovated. The old Estadio de San José was destroyed in the quake and later demolished. In 2010 the San José reopened after being rebuilt.
The venue was renovated for the FIFA regulations for the 2011 U-20 World Cup . The east and west stands were given a new roof, new changing rooms for players and referees and a parking lot were built. Around 8.7 billion Colombian pesos were earmarked for the renovation .
