The Estadio Deportivo Cali was built in 2008. Since then, the club Deportivo Cali has played its home games here, which was previously at the Estadio Olímpico Pascual Guerrero and played there in the same stadium as local rivals America de Cali . Deportivo was the first club in Colombia to build its own stadium. Originally, without seat shells in the main stands, it had a capacity of up to 53,347 spectators; In 2018, 12,000 seats were added and the capacity was reduced to 42,000 spectators. The club has been Colombian football champion eight times and came twice to the final of the Copa Libertadores , the continental competition for club teams in South America , where they failed both times. Given the success of Deportivo Cali, it made sense to build its own stadium, which was opened in 2008 when the national team of Colombia played against that of Nigeria . Colombia won 1-0.

The Estadio Deportivo Cali is just one of many stadium projects planned for large clubs, but the only one that was actually built. Separate stadiums were also planned for Los Millonarios , Atlético Nacional and Independiente Medellín , but these were not realized because Colombian football, which had benefited greatly from drug trafficking in its heyday in the 1980s and 1990s, was in an economic and sporting crisis stuck and thereby the construction of own stadiums and the associated expenditure of money became impossible. In Cali, however, the stadium was actually built. In addition to football competitions, concerts are also held here.
