history

The Estadio General Santander

The Estadio General Santander in Cúcuta , the sixth largest city in Colombia , was built in 1948. The stadium was opened in the same year. The new stadium was named Estadio General Santander , a tribute to Francisco de Paula Santander (1792-1840), a General of the New Grenadine Union, Vice President of Greater Colombia and President of the Republic of New Granada. The Cúcuta Deportivo club has played its home games here since the stadium was completed in 1948 . Deportivo have been Colombian champions once to this day (2006). This title was also the only major title in the history of the club so far. Cúcuta Deportivo is currently playing in the second Colombian division . In the 2007 and 2008 seasons, the Estadio General Santander also played the Copa Libertadores , the continental championship in South America , for which Cúcuta Deportivo was able to qualify in the preseason. However, the club was not particularly successful there.

The Estadio General Santander was built in 1948. This stadium was first renovated in 1983 on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the city of Cúcuta. The arena's capacity was increased for the first time and some security problems were resolved. In addition, the technical equipment has been improved. A second renovation of the Estadio General Santander was 23 years later in 2006. During these renovations, the capacity was increased again, so that it was the 42,901 spectator seats that are still valid today. An important reason for the expansion of the stadium was the increasing success of Cúcuta Deportivo.

For the 2017 season it was announced that Cúcuta Deportivo will play its home games in Zipaquirá , as the club could not come to an agreement with the government of the Departamento de Norte de Santander about the use of the stadium in Cúcuta. In the course of the return series, however, the club returned to Cúcuta.
