history
Location of the stadium in Caldas |
On July 30, 1994, the Estadio Palogrande was inaugurated with the game Once Caldas against the Brazilian team Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte , which Cruzeiro won 5-2. It replaced the Estadio Fernando Londoño y Londoño , which was completed in 1936 and demolished in 1992, with 16,000 seats. The grandstands of the sports facility are completely covered and offer 36,553 seats. A cinder track runs between the stands and the playing field . The name Palogrande ( German : large pole) leads back to a large tree; which stood on today's stadium property in the 1930s.
Some renovations were done for the Copa América 2001 . Once Caldas reached the final (return leg) in the 2004 Copa Libertadores and played on July 1, 2004 in the facility for the second leg against the Argentinian team of CA Boca Juniors . The first leg ended 0-0 and after regular playing time it was 1-1. Once Caldas won 2-0 on penalties and won the Copa Libertadores for the first time . The stadium will be renewed for the 2011 U-20 World Cup . The disabled spaces on the north stand will be expanded; the stadium capacity drops to 36,112 seats. Additional changing rooms will be built, new display panels will be installed and a new lawn will be laid. The total financial volume of the renovation is estimated at 18 billion Colombian pesos (approx. 7 million euros ).
