Clifton David Briley (born January 8, 1964 in Nashville , Tennessee ) is an American lawyer and Democratic Party politician . He has been the mayor of his native city since March 6, 2018.

Career

Briley was born in the Baptist Hospital in Nashville. After completing his school education, which he completed in his hometown, he began studying law at Georgetown University in Washington, DC . He interrupted this after obtaining his bachelor's degree to work as a teacher in Latin America for some time . He then returned to the United States to continue his studies at Golden Gate University in San Francisco . He specialized in environmental and administrative law and graduated with a Juris Doctor . In the following years he worked as a lawyer: initially together with his brother Rob , from 2007 in a large law firm .

politics

From 1997 to 2007, Briley served on the joint metropolitan council of Davidson County and the City of Nashville. During this time he mainly took care of household, finance, environment and schools and also campaigned against discrimination in various areas, including homosexuals . In 2007 he ran for the first time for the post of mayor, which his party friend Karl Dean was ultimately able to achieve. After Briley landed in fifth place, he withdrew from local politics.

In 2015, Briley ran for the post of Deputy Mayor, this time successfully. After the previous mayor Megan Barry resigned on March 6, 2018, Briley was sworn in on the same day, initially temporarily, as his successor. At the end of May 2018, Briley, who is considered a progressive Democrat , had to face an election for mayor. Here he prevailed in the first ballot.

Briley is married to defense attorney Jodie Bell, the couple have a son and live in Salemtown. Briley's grandfather Beverly held the office of Mayor of Nashville between 1963 and 1975, and his brother Rob was a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives from 1999 to 2008 .
