Karl Foster Dean (born September 20, 1955 in Sioux Falls ) is an American politician ( Democrat ) and former mayor of Nashville .

Life

Dean was born the second of three brothers in South Dakota and spent part of his childhood in Wisconsin . Dean's father worked for IBM . Dean attended middle and high school in Gardner , Massachusetts . He studied law at Columbia University in New York City . In 1978 he completed his studies with a Bachelor of Arts . By 1981 he received his PhD from Vanderbilt University in Nashville . This was followed by a job as a lawyer for a law firm in Worcester .

In Nashville, Dean worked as a public defender from 1990. He became Metro Law Director in 1999 until he was elected Mayor of Nashville in 2007. For the election campaign, he used funds from an inheritance from his wife's uncle, Joe C. Davis, a former coal-mining entrepreneur to a large extent. The high proportion of these own donations in the total use of funds was sharply criticized by his opponent Bob Clement . In August 2011 he was re-elected until 2015. In 2018 he ran for governor of Tennessee , but was defeated by Republican Bill Lee .

Dean is married to lawyer Anne Davis, whom he met while studying in Nashville, and has two daughters and a son. Karl Dean grew up in a Lutheran family and later converted to Catholicism , to which his wife belongs.
