Robert Nelson "Bob" Clement (born September 23, 1943 in Nashville , Tennessee ) is an American politician . Between 1988 and 2003 he represented the state of Tennessee in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Bob Clement, the son of former Governor Frank G. Clement , attended Hillsboro High School in Nashville until 1962 and then studied at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville until 1967 . He then continued his education at the University of Memphis until 1968 . From 1969 to 1971 he served in the Tennessee National Guard . Since 1971 he has been a member of this troop unit as a reservist. Between 1973 and 1979 he was a member of the Tennessee State Services Commission.

Politically, Clement joined the Democratic Party . In 1978 he tried unsuccessfully to nominate his party for the gubernatorial elections. From 1979 to 1981 he was a board member of the Tennessee Valley Authority . In 1982 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress . He was then from 1983 to 1987 President of Cumberland University in Lebanon .

After the resignation of Congressman Bill Boner , Clement was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the by-election due for the fifth seat of Tennessee , where he took up his new mandate on January 19, 1988. After he was confirmed in his mandate in the following seven regular congressional elections, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 2003. In 2002 he was one of 81 Democratic MPs who voted for the Iraq war . In the same year, he renounced a possible re-election to the US House of Representatives in favor of a then unsuccessful candidacy for the US Senate .

In 2007, Bob Clement ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Nashville. After his defeat in the runoff election against Karl Dean , he declared that he had no intention of seeking another public office. Clement is married to Mary Carson from Nashville.
