Samuel Powell

Samuel Powell (born July 10, 1776 in Norristown , Pennsylvania , †  August 2, 1841 in Rogersville , Tennessee ) was an American politician . Between 1815 and 1817 he represented the state of Tennessee in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Samuel Powell attended his homeland public schools and then Philadelphia College . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in his new profession. In 1800 he moved to Blountville , Tennessee, where he ran the state's first law school. In 1805 he moved to Rogersville, where he practiced as a lawyer. Between 1807 and 1809 he was a member of the Superior Court of Law and Equity ; from 1812 to 1813 he was a judge in the Tennessee First Judicial District.

Politically Powell was a member of the Democratic Republican Party . In the Tennessee state-wide congressional elections of 1814 , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC for the third mandate of the State of Tennessee , where he succeeded John Rhea on March 4, 1815 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1816, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1817 .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Samuel Powell returned to work as a lawyer. Between 1819 and 1841 he was again a judge in the first judicial district of his state. He died in Rogersville on August 2, 1841.
