John Morgan Bright

John Morgan Bright (born January 20, 1817 in Fayetteville , Tennessee , †  October 3, 1911 there ) was an American politician . Between 1871 and 1881 he represented the state of Tennessee in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Bright attended the public schools in Fayetteville and Bingham's School in Hillsboro ( North Carolina ). He then studied until 1839 at Nashville University . After a subsequent law degree at Transylvania University in Lexington ( Kentucky ) and his admission as a lawyer in 1841, he began to work in Fayetteville in his new profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

Bright was a member of the House of Representatives from Tennessee in 1847 and 1848 . Between 1861 and 1865, during the Civil War , he was on the staff of Governor Isham G. Harris . In the congressional elections of 1870 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Tennessee , where he succeeded Lewis Tillman on March 4, 1871 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1881 . Since 1875 he represented there as the successor of Horace Harrison the fifth district of his home state. Between 1875 and 1881 Bright was chairman of the committee that dealt with claims against the federal government. From 1875 to 1877 he also headed the Finance Ministry's expenditure monitoring committee.

After he was not re-elected in 1880, he had to leave Congress on March 3, 1881. As a result, he practiced as a lawyer again. John Bright died on October 3, 1911, at the age of 94, in the town of Fayetteville, his native town.
