Howard Henry Baker Sr. (born January 12, 1902 in Somerset , Pulaski County , Kentucky , † January 7, 1964 in Knoxville , Tennessee ) was an American politician . He represented the state of Tennessee as a member of the US House of Representatives .

Career

As a child, Baker and his family moved to Huntsville , Scott County, Tennessee. There and in Knox County he attended public schools. He graduated from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in 1922 and its Legal Department in 1924. He was admitted to the bar in 1923 and opened a practice in Huntsville.

Then Baker worked for some time as the publisher of a weekly in Huntsville. He also sat in the Tennessee House of Representatives in 1929 and 1930 . He was then a member of the Scott County's Board of Education in 1931 and 1932. He then worked as attorney general of the 19th judicial district of Tennessee between 1934 and 1948. He was also 1945 vice president and chief syndicate of the Oneida and Western Railroad . He was also a member of the Board of Directors of Oneida's First National Bank .

Baker ran for governor in 1938 and for the US Senate in 1940 , but failed in both cases. In 1940, 1948, 1952 and 1956 he took part as a delegate to the Republican National Convention . He was a Republican elected to the 82nd and the six subsequent meetings, where he the second constituency represented by Tennessee. His tenure ran from January 3, 1951 until his death in Knoxville on January 7, 1964. He was buried in Sherwood Memorial Gardens .

During his tenure in Congress, he did not participate in the Southern Manifesto , which spoke out against racial integration in public institutions.

Howard Henry Baker married Irene Bailey Baker . Her son Howard Henry Jr. , born in 1925 , later became a US Senator from Tennessee and majority leader of the Republican Senate faction as well as Chief of Staff of the White House under President Ronald Reagan and Ambassador to Japan .
