William McFarland

William McFarland (born September 15, 1821 in Morristown , Hamblen County , Tennessee , †  April 12, 1900 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1877 he represented the state of Tennessee in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William McFarland attended public schools in his home country and then Tusculum College in Greene County . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1861, he began to work in his new profession in 1865. He also held a number of local legal offices. In 1870 he was appointed district judge.

Politically, McFarland was a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional elections of 1874 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the first constituency of Tennessee , where he succeeded Roderick R. Butler on March 4, 1875 . Since he was defeated by Republican James Henry Randolph in the following elections in 1876 , he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1877 .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, William McFarland practiced law again. He was also mayor of Morristown for four years and was a member of its education committee. He died there on April 12, 1900.
