Finis J. Garrett

Finis James Garrett (born August 26, 1875 in Ore Springs , Weakley County , Tennessee , †  May 25, 1956 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1905 and 1929 he represented the state of Tennessee in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Finis Garrett attended his home public schools and Clinton College in Kentucky . After that he was at Bethel College in McKenzie until 1897 . He also studied law. In the years that followed, Garrett served as a newspaper editor, teacher, and lawyer. Between 1900 and 1905 he held the legal office of a Masters in Chancery .

Politically, Garrett was a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional elections of 1904 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the ninth constituency of Tennessee, where he succeeded Rice Alexander Pierce on March 4, 1905 . After eleven re-elections, he was able to complete twelve legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1929 . During this time the First World War fell . Between 1913 and 1920, the 16th , 17th , 18th and 19th amendments to the Constitution were passed in Congress. From 1917 to 1919 Garrett was chairman of the Committee on Insular Affairs . From 1923 he led the Democratic Group in the US House of Representatives as a minority leader . In 1924 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in New York , where John W. Davis was nominated as a presidential candidate.

In 1928 Finis Garrett declined to run again. Instead, he sought his party's nomination for the US Senate elections , which, however, went safely back to incumbent Kenneth McKellar . Between 1929 and 1955 Garrett was a judge on the United States Court of Customs and Patent Appeals . Since 1937 he had chaired this federal court, which no longer exists today . He died on May 25, 1956 in the federal capital Washington and was buried in Dresden (Tennessee).
