John Goff Ballentine

John Goff Ballentine (born May 20, 1825 in Pulaski , Tennessee , †  November 23, 1915 there ) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1887 he represented the state of Tennessee in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Ballentine attended the Wurtemberg Academy until 1841 and then the University of Nashville until 1845 . After a subsequent law degree at Harvard University and his admission to the bar in 1848, he began to practice in Pulaski in his new profession. At times he was also a member of the teaching staff at Livingston Law School in New York . In 1854 Ballentine moved to Mississippi , where he worked as a lawyer and in agriculture. In 1860 he settled in Memphis .

During the Civil War , Ballentine was a colonel in the Confederate Army . After the war he returned to Pulaski. Politically, Ballentine was a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional elections of 1882 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of Tennessee , where he succeeded Washington C. Whitthorne on March 4, 1883 . After being re-elected, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1887 .

In 1886, John Ballentine turned down another congressional candidacy. After leaving the US House of Representatives, he retired. He died on November 23, 1915 at the age of 90 in his native Pulaski.
