John Houston Savage

John Houston Savage (born October 9, 1815 in McMinnville , Warren County , Tennessee , †  April 5, 1904 ) was an American politician . Between 1849 and 1859 he represented the state of Tennessee twice in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Savage attended public schools in his home country. He later took part in a war against the Seminoles as a soldier . After a subsequent law degree and his license to practice law, he began to work in Smithville in his new profession. From 1841 to 1847 he served as the district attorney in the fourth judicial district of Tennessee. He was also a colonel in the state militia. During the Mexican-American War he rose from major to lieutenant colonel in an infantry unit in the US Army .

Politically, Savage was a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional elections of 1848 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Tennessee , where he succeeded Hugh Lawson White Hill on March 4, 1849 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1853 . In 1852 he decided not to run for office. In the elections of 1854 he was re-elected to Congress, where he replaced William Cullom on March 4, 1855 , who had succeeded him two years earlier. By March 3, 1859, Savage completed two more legislative terms, which were marked by the events and discussions leading up to the Civil War .

During the Civil War, John Savage was a Colonel in the Confederate Army . After the war he continued his political career at the state level. From 1877 to 1879 and again between 1887 and 1891 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Tennessee . He was also a member of the State Senate between 1879 and 1881 . John Savage died in McMinnville on April 5, 1904.
