John W. Gaines
John Wesley Gaines (born August 24, 1860 in Nashville , Tennessee , † July 4, 1926 there ) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1909 he represented the state of Tennessee in the US House of Representatives .
Career
John Gaines was born in Wrecoe, a now-defunct town near Nashville. He attended both public and private schools. He later taught as a teacher himself for some time. As a result, he learned in a home study law . He also studied medicine. He graduated from the University of Nashville and Vanderbilt University . Gaines never worked as a medic. After his admission to the bar in 1884, he began practicing his new profession in Nashville in 1885.
Politically, Gaines was a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1896 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Tennessee , where he succeeded Joseph E. Washington on March 4, 1897 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1909 . During this time, the Spanish-American War of 1898 took place .
In 1908 Gaines was no longer nominated for re-election by his party. In the following years he practiced again as a lawyer in Nashville, where he died on July 4, 1926.
