Felix Kirk Zollicoffer (born May 19, 1812 in Bigbyville , Maury County , Tennessee , †  January 19, 1862 in Mill Springs , Kentucky ) was an American politician . Between 1853 and 1859 he represented the state of Tennessee in the US House of Representatives . He then served as an officer in the Confederation Army during the Civil War .

Career

Felix Zollicoffer attended the public schools in his home country. He then worked in the printing and newspaper industry. In this industry he worked in various cities in Tennessee and Alabama in 1828 and 1843 . In 1835 he ran the State Printing House in Tennessee. A year later he took part in a campaign against the Seminoles in Florida as a first lieutenant . He then published two daily newspapers in 1837. Politically, Zollicoffer became a member of the Whig Party , whose party newspaper "Republican Banner" he published in 1843. Between 1845 and 1849 he was an auditor in the Tennessee State Treasury.

Zollicoffer was a member of the Tennessee Senate from 1849 to 1852 . In 1852 he was also a delegate to the last Whig National Convention , where Winfield Scott was nominated for the party's presidential nomination. In the congressional election of 1852 Zollicoffer was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of Tennessee , where he succeeded William Cullom on March 4, 1853 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1859 . Since 1855 he represented the American Party , which he had joined after the dissolution of the Whigs. His time in Congress was determined by the discussions and events leading up to the civil war.

In 1858, Felix Zollicoffer decided not to run again for Congress. In the spring of 1861 he was a delegate at a conference in the federal capital, Washington, where attempts were unsuccessful to prevent the outbreak of civil war. Zollicoffer was originally against the secession of his home state, but then joined the south. During the war he became a Brigadier General of the Confederation . He was badly wounded at the Battle of Mill Springs , Kentucky. On January 19, 1862, he succumbed to his injuries.
