Nicholas N. Cox

Nicholas Nichols Cox (born January 6, 1837 in Bedford County , Tennessee , †  May 2, 1912 in Franklin , Tennessee) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1901 he represented the state of Tennessee in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Nicholas Cox was born in Tennessee but grew up in Seguin ( Texas on), where he attended the public schools. He later returned to Tennessee. After studying law at Lebanon Law School and being admitted to the bar in 1858, he began working in his new profession in Linden . During the Civil War he was a colonel in the Confederate Army . After the war, he settled in Franklin in 1866, where he worked in agriculture.

Politically, Cox was a member of the Democratic Party . In the presidential election of 1860 he was the elector of the losing South Democratic candidate, John C. Breckinridge . He then retired from politics for 30 years. In the congressional election of 1890 , Cox was then elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of Tennessee , where he succeeded Washington C. Whitthorne on March 4, 1891 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1901 . During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell .

In 1900, Cox declined to run again. As a result, he practiced as a lawyer again. He also worked in the banking industry. He died on May 2, 1912 in Franklin, where he was also buried.
