John W. Leftwich
John William Leftwich (born September 7, 1826 in Bedford , Virginia , † March 6, 1870 in Lynchburg , Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1866 and 1867 he represented the state of Tennessee in the US House of Representatives .
Career
John Leftwich attended the public schools of his home country and then studied medicine at Philadelphia Medical College until 1850 . He then moved to Memphis , Tennessee, where he worked in commerce. After Tennessee was re-admitted to the Union in 1866, he was elected as a unionist in the eighth constituency of that state in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on July 24, 1866. By March 3, 1867, he ended the current legislative period there, which was characterized by the discussions between the Republican Party and President Andrew Johnson . In the regular congressional elections of 1866 Leftwich was defeated by Republican David Alexander Nunn . He himself became a member of the Democratic Party at that time .
In 1868, John Leftwich was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in New York , where Horatio Seymour was nominated as a presidential candidate. He served as Mayor of Memphis between 1869 and 1870. In the elections of 1868 he ran unsuccessfully against William Jay Smith for return to Congress. Leftwich, however, appealed against the outcome of the election. He died on March 6, 1870 on the way to Washington, where his complaint was to be decided.
