Career

Jimmy Duncan is the son of Congressman John Duncan . He studied at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville until 1969 . After a subsequent law degree at George Washington University in Washington, DC and his admission to the bar in 1973, he began to work in his new profession. Between 1970 and 1987 he was a member of the Army National Guard and the US Army Reserve . From 1981 to 1988 Duncan served as a criminal justice judge in Knoxville.

Politically, like his father, he became a member of the Republican Party . After the death of his father, who was still a congressman at the time, he was elected as its successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington at the due by-election for the second seat of Tennessee and took up this mandate on November 8, 1988 and has been since then re-elected every two years. He is or was a member of the Committee on Natural Resources , the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the Committee on Transport and Infrastructure, as well as a total of five sub-committees. In addition, he is or was represented in five Congressional Caucuses .

In July 2017, Duncan announced that he would not run again in the 2018 election. His mandate ends on January 3, 2019. In April 2018, it was announced that the Ethics Bureau of Congress was investigating Duncan for embezzlement of campaign funds. Accordingly, he is said to have used about $ 100,000 in funds for himself, family and friends for private purposes, which were intended for political purposes.

Duncan is considered a Conservative MP. What is remarkable is his behavior in relation to the Iraq war and the war in Afghanistan . Although he is a member of the Republican Party of ex-President George W. Bush , he voted against these wars and later for a quick troop withdrawal. He was also against an increase in the military budget to finance these operations.

John Duncan is married and lives privately in Knoxville.
