John R. Neal

John Randolph Neal (born November 26, 1836 in Clinton , Anderson County , Tennessee , †  March 26, 1889 in Rhea Springs , Tennessee) was an American politician . Between 1885 and 1889 he represented the state of Tennessee in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Neal attended the common schools, the Hiwasse College and then to 1858 the Emory and Henry College in Emory ( Virginia ). After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1859, he began to work in Athens in his new profession. During the Civil War , Neal rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Confederation Army . After the war he taught as a teacher for some time. Eventually he settled in Rhea Springs, where he practiced as a lawyer. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In 1874 he was elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives; in 1878 and 1879 he was a member of the State Senate , of which he was President in 1879. In this capacity he also held the post of lieutenant governor ex officio . In the 1884 congressional election , Neal was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the third constituency of Tennessee , where he succeeded George Gibbs Dibrell on March 4, 1885 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1889 .

In 1888, Neal decided not to run for another candidate for health reasons. He died in Rhea Springs on March 26, 1889, just three weeks after the end of his last term.
