Byron Pope (* 1893 ; † 1973 ) was an American politician . Between 1937 and 1939, as President of the State Senate, he was the de facto lieutenant governor of the state of Tennessee , although this office was not formally introduced until 1951.

Career

The sources on Byron Pope are very poor. It starts with his first name, which is sometimes given as Byron and sometimes as Bryan. In Find a Grave there is Byron Pope, who was born on November 3, 1893, in the October 31, 1973 Chattanooga died. This is referred to as a veteran of the Second World War . A reference to the State Senator is not given and is therefore questionable, although this could be the same person.

One thing is certain: Byron Pope was born in 1893 and died in 1973. He was a member of the Senate of Tennessee between 1937 and 1939 and also President of this chamber. In his capacity as Senate President, Pope was Deputy to Governor Gordon Browning . He thus actually held the office of lieutenant governor. This post was or is constitutionally anchored in most other states; in Tennessee this has only been the case since 1951. After his time in the State Senate, Byron Pope was no longer politically active.
