John Thompson (politician, 1852)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Thompson ( 1852 - 1919 ) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1899 he was the de facto lieutenant governor of the state of Tennessee as President of the State Senate , even if this office was not formally introduced until 1951.

The sources on John Thompson are relatively poor. What is certain is that he lived between 1852 and 1919 and belonged to the Democratic Party . He was several times a member of the Tennessee Senate and from 1897 to 1899 its president. In that capacity, he was Deputy Governor Robert Love Taylor . With this he actually held the post of lieutenant governor. This office was or is constitutionally anchored in most other states. In Tennessee this has only been the case since 1951. After his time as Lieutenant Governor, his track is lost again.
