Elijah G. Tollett

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elijah G. Tollett (* 1864 , † 1926 ) was an American politician . Between 1907 and 1909 he was the de facto lieutenant governor of the state of Tennessee as President of the State Senate , even though this office was not formally introduced until 1951.

Not much is known about Elijah Tollett. What is certain is that he lived in Tennessee at least temporarily and was a member of the Democratic Party . He was elected to the Tennessee Senate twice in a row for Bledsoe County and was its president from 1907 to 1909. In that capacity he was Deputy Governor Malcolm R. Patterson . He thus actually held the office of lieutenant governor. This office was or is constitutionally anchored in most other states; in Tennessee this has only been the case since 1951. After that, he no longer appeared politically. He died in 1926.
