Eugene J. Bryan (born June 25, 1889 in Chattanooga , Tennessee , † 1958 ) was an American politician . Between 1923 and 1925, he was the de facto lieutenant governor of the state of Tennessee as President of the State Senate , even if this office was not formally introduced until 1951.

Career

After studying law and being admitted to the bar, Eugene Bryan began working in the profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1915 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Tennessee ; from 1921 to 1925 he was a member of the State Senate, of which he had been President since 1923.

In this capacity, he was Deputy Governor Austin Peay . He thus actually held the office of lieutenant governor. This post was or is constitutionally anchored in most other states; in Tennessee this has only been the case since 1951. In 1939, Bryan became a member of his party's state board for Tennessee. He died in 1958.
