Nathaniel Baxter Junior
Nathaniel Baxter Jr. ( 1844 - September 29, 1913 ) was an American politician . Between 1911 and 1913, he was the de facto lieutenant governor of the state of Tennessee as President of the State Senate , even though this office was not formally introduced until 1951.
Career
Nathaniel Baxter attended a private school near Nashville . In the autumn of 1861, despite his youth, he joined the Confederation Army , in which he served during the Civil War. He was wounded twice and has since been taken prisoner. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1867, he worked in this profession for several years. He then served in the administration at Chancery Court in Nashville for six years . He then went into banking, where he made it to the President of the First National Bank of Nashville . Baxter was also active in the railroad business and was President of the Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railway Company for 14 years until 1902 . Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party .
Since 1911, Baxter sat in the Tennessee Senate, of which he became president. In 1912 he was confirmed in this capacity for two more years. He then held this office until his death on September 29, 1913. In this capacity, he was Deputy Governor Ben W. Hooper . With that he actually held the post of lieutenant governor. After his death, Newton H. White was his successor, who had already held this office between 1901 and 1903.
