Cabell Rives Berry (born July 4, 1848 in Amherst County , Virginia , † August 27, 1910 in Franklin , Tennessee ) was an American politician . Between 1885 and 1887 he was the de facto lieutenant governor of the state of Tennessee as President of the State Senate , even if this office was not formally introduced until 1951.

Career

Cabell Berry grew up on a plantation in Virginia. He attended Higginbotham Academy , a University of Virginia preschool . During the Civil War he served in the Confederation Army . He then moved to Tennessee, where he worked for the railroad. He was then a teacher in Davidson County for some time . After a subsequent law degree and his admission to the bar, he began to work in Williamson County in this profession.

Politically, Berry joined the Democratic Party . Between 1883 and 1885 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Tennessee ; from 1885 to 1891 he sat in the State Senate, of which he was president from 1885 to 1887. In this capacity he was the deputy to Governor William B. Bate . With this he actually held the post of lieutenant governor. This office was or is constitutionally anchored in most other states; in Tennessee this has only been the case since 1951. Berry later practiced as a lawyer again. He was also mayor of Franklin City for three terms. He died there on August 27, 1910.
