Benjamin F. Alexander

Benjamin F. Alexander ( January 2, 1849 - March 1, 1911 ). Between 1883 and 1885, he was the de facto lieutenant governor of the state of Tennessee as President of the State Senate , even though this office was not formally introduced until 1951.

Career

Benjamin Alexander was the son of a farmer. He grew up on his parents' farm in Rutherford County . He was still living on this farm in 1880. He became a member of the Democratic Party and served two terms in the Tennessee Senate, of which he became president in 1883. As President of the State Senate, he was deputy to Governor William B. Bate . With this he actually held the post of lieutenant governor. This office was or is constitutionally anchored in most other states; in Tennessee this has only been the case since 1951. After his time as President of the Senate, he was no longer politically active. He died on March 1, 1911.
