Newton Harris White (born September 2, 1860 in Giles County , Tennessee , † 1931 ) was an American politician . Between 1901 and 1903 and again from 1913 to 1915, as President of the State Senate, he was de facto lieutenant governor of the state of Tennessee, even if this office was not formally introduced until 1951.

Career

Newton White attended public schools in Pulaski . He later worked in agriculture and banking. He was one of the founders and directors of the Union Bank & Trust Company of Pulaski . He was also a director at the National Life & Accident Company of Nashville . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . In 1897 he became a member of his state's Railway Commission. Two years later he was a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives . In 1900 he served as Acting State Treasurer for a short time .

From 1901 to 1903 and again from 1913 to 1915 he was a member and president of the State Senate. In 1913, however, he only took over the post after the death of Nathaniel Baxter in September of that year. In this capacity he was Deputy Governors Benton McMillin and Ben W. Hooper . He thus actually held the office of lieutenant governor. This post was or is constitutionally anchored in most other states; in Tennessee this has only been the case since 1951. In 1924, White attended the Democratic National Convention in New York as a delegate . He died in 1931.
