William R. Crabtree

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

William Riley Crabtree (* 1867 ; † 1920 ) was an American politician . Between 1917 and 1919, he was the de facto lieutenant governor of the state of Tennessee as President of the State Senate , although this office was not formally introduced until 1951.

Nothing is known about William Crabtree's youth and schooling. There is also no information in the sources about his career outside of politics. He was a member of the Democratic Party and mayor of Chattanooga from 1907 to 1909 . In 1917, Crabtree became a member and president of the Tennessee Senate. In that capacity, he was Deputy Governor Tom C. Rye . He thus actually held the office of lieutenant governor. This post was or is constitutionally anchored in most other states; in Tennessee this has only been the case since 1951. He died in 1920.
