William C. Dismukes
William Cantrell Dismukes (born July 1, 1850 in Sumner County , Tennessee , † July 20, 1903 in Nashville , Tennessee) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1895 he was the de facto lieutenant governor of the state of Tennessee as President of the State Senate , although this office was not formally introduced until 1951.
Career
William Dismukes attended private schools and graduated from the Kentucky Military Institute . After studying law at Cumberland University and being admitted to the bar in 1871, he began working in this profession in Gallatin . In the meantime he was also a justice of the peace in his homeland. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . From 1889 to 1890 he was a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives .
From 1891 to 1895 Dismukes was a member and president of the State Senate for two legislative terms. So he was deputy to Governor John P. Buchanan and from 1893 by his successor Peter Turney . In fact, he held the office of lieutenant governor. This office was or is constitutionally anchored in most states; in Tennessee this has only been the case since 1951. He later practiced as a lawyer again. William Dismukes died in Nashville on July 20, 1903.
