Ronald Lynn "Ron" Ramsey (* 20th November 1955 ) is an American politician of the Republican Party and was since 2007 the first Republican lieutenant governor of the state of Tennessee . He did not stand for re-election in 2016.

biography

After attending Sullivan Central High School in Blountville , he began studying industrial technology at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) in 1973 and graduated in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science (BS Industrial Technology). In 1990 he founded his own company with Ron Ramsey and Associates and has since been approved as a broker and auctioneer .

In addition, he began a political career and initially represented the Republicans in the House of Representatives from Tennessee . In 1996 he was elected to the Tennessee Senate for the first time in District 2 and has been a member of it ever since. In 2007, Ramsey became the first Republican since the constitution of 1870 to become Lieutenant Governor of Tennessee. As such, he is also Speaker of the Senate .

On February 28, 2009, he announced his candidacy for Republican in the 2010 gubernatorial election . In the code ( Primary ) his party on August 5, 2010, however, he only received 22.1 of the vote and was third in the field of Republican candidates. He was thus subject to the previous mayor of Knoxville , who was elected governor of Tennessee on November 2, 2010 , Bill Haslam , who received 47.3 percent of the vote in the primary elections. Second place in the Republican Primary was Congressman Zach Wamp , who received 29.2 percent of the vote.

During the nomination campaign, Ramsey, who was supported by the Tea Party movement , drew attention to himself when he stated in an election speech that Muslims cannot invoke the rights arising from the first amendment to the constitution because Islam is not one Religion , but rather a cult . He also said that rioting to prevent a mosque was understandable as the Sharia was "scary".

His last term as lieutenant governor ran until November 2016. He did not stand for re-election, which ended his term.
