William Edward "Bill" Haslam (born August 23, 1958 in Knoxville , Tennessee ) is a US-American politician ( Republican Party ) and from January 15, 2011 to January 19, 2019 Governor of the state of Tennessee. Previously, he was mayor of his hometown Knoxville since 2003 .

biography

Haslam was first elected Mayor of Knoxville in 2003. He replaced Victor Ashe , who was no longer a candidate after four terms. Prior to his election as mayor, Haslam served as vice president of the Pilot Corporation , an oil company founded by his father, Jim Haslam . In the mayoral elections in 2007 Haslam won with 87 percent of the vote and so went into a second term.

In August 2010, his party nominated him as a candidate for the gubernatorial elections in November of that year. In the Republican primary he prevailed against Congressman Zach Wamp and Lieutenant Governor Ron Ramsey . His Democratic competitor for the successor of Phil Bredesen was Mike McWherter , son of the former governor Ned McWherter . Ultimately, Haslam clearly won the election with 65 percent of the vote and was thus able to take over the governorship in January 2011. On November 4, 2014, Haslam was elected to a second term with over 70 percent of the vote.

Political positions

Haslam rejects same-sex marriages and is an anti-abortionist . He is also committed to gun law . One of the main concerns of his tenure is to increase the proportion of university graduates . Known as the "Tennessee Promise" plan, the plan is to increase the rate from 32% to 55% by 2025 by distributing state lottery surpluses to those in need for grants for the first two years of study.

Haslam is a proponent of the death penalty in the United States . After the delivery bottlenecks in the drug cocktail for lethal injection (the execution method currently used in Tennessee), Haslam signed a law on May 22, 2014, which reinstates the electric chair as the primary method in the event that execution by lethal injection is due lack of medication cannot be enforced.
