Victor Ashe

Victor Ashe (* 1. January 1945 in Knoxville , Tennessee ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ) and diplomat . He was the United States Ambassador to Poland until September 29, 2009 .

Ashe studied history at Yale University . In 1967 he received his Bachelor of Arts there . He later studied law at the University of Tennessee's College of Law , where he graduated in 1974. Ashe then became a lawyer.

In 1968, Ashe was elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives at the age of 23 . In 1975 he was elected to the Tennessee Senate and served for the next nine years. November 1987, Ashe was elected Mayor of Knoxville. During his 16-year tenure as mayor, the longest term ever held by a Mayor of Knoxville, he was twinned with the Polish city of Chełm . In 1995 he was elected President of the US Conference of Mayors and also served as President of the Tennessee Municipal League . From 2001 to 2004 he served on the board of directors of the state mortgage company Fannie Mae .

Ashe was proposed by President George W. Bush to succeed Christopher R. Hill as ambassador to the Republic of Poland on April 8, 2004 and was confirmed by the US Senate on May 21 . He was sworn in on June 23, 2004 in Washington, DC . Ashe is married with a son and daughter.
