Christopher Robert Hill (* 1952 in Rhode Iceland ) is a former American diplomat , among others between 1996 and 1999 ambassador in Macedonia , 2000-2004 Ambassador to Poland , between 2004 and 2005 ambassador to South Korea, and from 2005 to 2009 Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs . After serving as Ambassador to Iraq between 2009 and 2010 , he became Dean of the Faculty of International Relations at the University of Denver in 2010 .

Life

Studies and beginning of the diplomatic career

Hill, whose father was also a diplomat, began after school to study economics at Bowdoin College in Brunswick , which he graduated in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Economics). After working for the Peace Corps in Cameroon between 1974 and 1976 , he joined the US State Department's diplomatic service . He became Acting Chargé d' affaires of the Embassy in Albania on October 1 , after diplomatic relations had been established on March 15, 1991, and remained in this post until the inauguration of the first Ambassador, William Edwin Ryerson, on December 21, 1991.

Hill worked intermittently as a fellow for the American Political Science Association (APSA) and on the staff of the Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives from New York Stephen J. Solarz . At times he was also Senior Director for Southeastern Europe Affairs of the USNSC ( National Security Council ) . He also completed postgraduate studies at Naval War College (NWC), which he completed in 1994 with a Master of Arts (MA).

Ambassador and Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs

On July 29, 1996 Hill became the first US ambassador to Macedonia and held this position until August 2, 1996, before M. Michael Einik was succeeded as ambassador on September 7, 1999. After a subsequent assignment as special envoy for Kosovo , he succeeded Daniel Fried as ambassador to Poland on July 27, 2000 and remained in this diplomatic post until April 14, 2004.

After completing his work in Poland, Hill replaced Thomas C. Hubbard as ambassador to South Korea on April 1, 2004 and held this diplomatic post until April 12, 2005. On April 8, 2005, he was appointed assistant to James A. Kelly Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs , whereby he was head of the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs . He held this office until April 21, 2009, before being replaced by Kurt M. Campbell on June 2, 2009 . Most recently, he succeeded Ryan Crocker as the new ambassador to Iraq on April 20, 2009 and held this post until he was replaced by the previous ambassador to Turkey , James Franklin Jeffrey , on August 16, 2010.

Since retiring from the diplomatic service in 2010, Hill has served as the Dean of the Department of International Relations at the University of Denver in 2010.
