Zachary Paul "Zach" Wamp (born October 28, 1957 in Fort Benning , Georgia ) is an American politician . Between 1995 and 2011 he represented the state of Tennessee in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Zach Wamp attended the McCallie School in Chattanooga until 1976 . He then studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville . He then worked in the real estate industry. He also began a political career as a member of the Republican Party .

In the 1994 congressional election , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the third constituency of Tennessee , where he succeeded Democrat Marilyn Lloyd on January 3, 1995 . After seven re-elections, where he won against John Wolfe in 2002 and 2004 , he was able to complete eight terms in Congress until January 3, 2011 . These were shaped by the events of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 and the Iraq war . In Congress, Wamp was a member of the Grants Committee and two of its sub-committees.

In 2010, Zach Wamp declined to run for Congress again; instead, he ran unsuccessfully for governor of Tennessee. In the primary he was defeated by the eventual winner Bill Haslam . He has two children with his wife, Kimberly. The family lives in Chattanooga.
