Hugh Lawson White Hill

Hugh Lawson White Hill (born March 1, 1810 in McMinnville , Warren County , Tennessee , †  January 18, 1892 in Hills Creek , Tennessee) was an American politician . Between 1847 and 1849 he represented the state of Tennessee in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Hugh Hill was a cousin of US Senator Benjamin Harvey Hill of Georgia . He attended private schools, the Carroll Male Academy in McMinnville and Cumberland College in Nashville . After that he worked as a teacher for a short time. After all, he worked in agriculture, especially fruit growing. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1837 and 1839 and again in 1841 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Tennessee .

In the congressional election of 1846 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fourth constituency of Tennessee , where he succeeded Alvan Cullom on March 4, 1847 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1848, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1849 . This was determined by the events of the Mexican-American War . After leaving the House of Representatives, Hugh Hill returned to farming. In 1870 he was a delegate to a meeting to revise the Tennessee Constitution. He died on January 18, 1892 in Hills Creek.
