Stephen Ira "Steve" Cohen (born May 24, 1949 in Memphis , Tennessee ) is an American politician . Since 2007 he has represented the state of Tennessee in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Steve Cohen grew up in Florida and at times in California , where his parents had moved in the meantime. He later returned to his native Memphis. He graduated from Cora Gables High School in Florida. Until 1971 he studied at Vanderbilt University in Nashville . After completing a law degree at the University of Memphis and being admitted to the bar, he began working in his new profession.

At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1977 he was vice president of an assembly to revise the state constitution of Tennessee. From 1978 to 1980 he was district administrator in Shelby County ; between 1982 and 2006 he was a member of the Tennessee Senate . In 1994, he unsuccessfully applied for his party's nomination for the then upcoming gubernatorial elections . Two years later, in 1996, Cohen ran unsuccessfully for Congress .

In the 2006 congressional election , Cohen was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the ninth constituency of Tennessee , where he succeeded Harold Ford Jr. on January 3, 2007 . As he was re-elected in all subsequent elections, including the one in 2016, he can continue to exercise his mandate today. His latest legislative term runs until January 3, 2019. In Congress, Cohen is or was a member of the Justice Committee and the Committee on Transport and Infrastructure, as well as a total of five sub-committees. He is also a member of several Congressional Caucuses .
