Thomas "Tom" Jefferson Murray (born August 1, 1894 in Jackson , Tennessee ; † November 28, 1971 ibid) was an American politician and represented the state of Tennessee as a member of the US House of Representatives .

Career

Tom Murray attended public school in Jackson. He graduated from Union University in Jackson in 1914 and from the Legal Department of Cumberland University in Lebanon in 1917 . Then he completed his teacher training. During the First World War , Murray enlisted in the United States Army . He served there between 1918 and 1919.

After the war he worked as a lawyer in his private practice. He then served as the attorney general of the 12th Judicial District of Tennessee from 1922 to 1933. He then worked in the legal department of the Department of Post in Washington between 1933 and 1942. Murray also had a seat on the Democratic Executive Committee of Madison County between 1924 and 1933 . He was also a member of the state's Democratic Executive Committee in 1923 and 1924. He was then also a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1928, 1932 and 1936.

Murray was elected as a Democrat in the 78th and 11 subsequent Congresses. He served in Congress until his resignation on December 30, 1966. His tenure ranged from January 3, 1943 to December 30, 1966. During that time in Congress, he had a seat on the Committee on the Post Office and Civil Service (81 ., 82nd and 84th to 89th Congress). He was also involved in the constitution of the Southern Manifesto , which spoke out against racial integration in public institutions. Furthermore, he decided to run again for the 90th Congress in 1966, but failed.

Murray died on November 28, 1971 in Jackson. He was buried in Hollywood Cemetery .
