Robin Beard
Robin Leo Beard Jr. (born August 21, 1939 in Knoxville , Tennessee , † June 16, 2007 in Charleston , South Carolina ) was an American politician . Between 1973 and 1983 he represented the state of Tennessee in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Robin Beard attended the Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville and then studied at Vanderbilt University until 1961 . Between 1962 and 1965 he was a member of the Marine Corps , where he achieved the rank of first lieutenant. Then he was part of the reserve of this force. Between 1970 and 1972, Beard was the Tennessee government's state commissioner for human resources.
Politically, Beard became a member of the Republican Party . In 1972 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Miami Beach , where President Richard Nixon was nominated for re-election. In the same year he also took part in the regional Republican party conference in Tennessee. In the 1972 congressional election , Beard was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the sixth constituency of his state , where he succeeded William Anderson on January 3, 1973 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1983 . During this time, among other things, the end of the Vietnam War and the Watergate affair fell .
In 1982 Beard renounced another candidacy for the US House of Representatives. Instead, he sought a seat in the US Senate , but he was defeated by the Democratic incumbent Jim Sasser with 38:62 percent of the vote. From 1984 to 1987 and again from 1992 to 1995 he was one of NATO's deputy secretaries-general in Brussels . Then he became the head of an import-export company. The politician, who was married to Catherine Beard, died on June 16, 2007 of a brain tumor.
