The network Spanner ( Eustroma reticulata ) as Weißgerippter Haarbusch tensioner or balsam network Spanner called, is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the tensioner (Geometridae). The name reticulata is derived from the Latin "reticulum" = network.

The moths reach a wingspan of about 20 to 25 millimeters. The front wings are colored black-brown and show white veins. Together with the white cross lines, this creates a striking net pattern. In the apex there is a white dividing line that joins the also white wavy line. The post-fiscal region and a narrow transverse band near the center are mostly lightened gray. The hind wings shimmer gray and are provided with two light transverse lines. A small central spot can also be seen. This is orange in the males, blackish in the females.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars have a greenish, yellowish or brownish color, a reddish, interrupted topline as well as whitish secondary ridge lines and also colored side stripes. The stigmas are blackish.

Geographical distribution and occurrence

The distribution area of ​​the Netzspanner extends from southwest and western Europe through the temperate zone to East Asia. In the north it extends into central Fennoscandinavia , in the south over Italy to the Balkans . It is preferably found in damp forests, shady valleys, riverside areas and boggy clearings.

Way of life

The nocturnal moths fly from June to September. They also visit artificial light sources . Forage plant of the caterpillars is the great balsam ( Impatiens noli-tangere ), which is also known under the name "Don't touch me". They prefer to feed on the unripe fruits and live from August to September. The pupa hibernates.
