Josiah M. Anderson

Josiah McNair Anderson (born November 29, 1807 in Pikeville , Bledsoe County , Tennessee , †  November 8, 1861 in Whitwell , Tennessee) was an American politician . Between 1849 and 1851 he represented the state of Tennessee in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Josiah Anderson attended public schools in his home country. After completing a law degree and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in his new profession in Jasper . At the same time he embarked on a political career. In the mid 1830s he joined the then newly formed Whig Party . From 1833 to 1837 he was a member and chairman of the Tennessee House of Representatives ; between 1843 and 1845 he was a member of the State Senate , as its President he also served.

In the congressional elections of 1848 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Tennessee , where he succeeded John Hervey Crozier on March 4, 1849 . Since he was defeated by the Democrat William Montgomery Churchwell in 1850 , he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1851 .

In 1861, Anderson was a delegate to an unsuccessful conference in Washington at the last minute to prevent the outbreak of civil war . Anderson supported the Southern Cause and became a colonel in the Tennessee State Militia. On November 8, 1861, near the town of Whitwell, he gave a speech justifying secession. Shortly after the end of this speech, he was murdered by political opponents.
