Samuel Axley Smith
Samuel Axley Smith (born June 26, 1822 in Monroe County , Tennessee , † November 25, 1863 in Ladd Springs , Tennessee) was an American politician . Between 1853 and 1859 he represented the state of Tennessee in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Samuel Smith worked as a teacher himself after attending primary school. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1845, he began in Cleveland , Bradley County to practice in his new profession. Between 1845 and 1850 he was a district attorney. Politically, Smith became a member of the Democratic Party . In 1848 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Baltimore , where Lewis Cass was nominated as a presidential candidate.
In the congressional elections of 1852 Smith was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the third constituency of Tennessee , where he succeeded William Montgomery Churchwell on March 4, 1853 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1859 . These were determined by the discussions and events leading up to the civil war . In 1858, Smith was not re-elected.
After leaving the US House of Representatives, Smith served as Federal Commissioner for the Land Office for a short time . During the Civil War he was assigned arms procurement in Tennessee for the Confederate Army . He died in Ladd Springs on November 25, 1863.
