James Rand McNally (* the 30th January 1944 in Dedham , Massachusetts ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . He has been the 50th lieutenant governor of the state of Tennessee as of January 10, 2017 . McNally has been a member of the Tennessee Senate since January 13, 1987, representing the 5th constituency.

Life

Randy McNally was born near Boston and grew up in Oak Ridge , a suburb of Knoxville . In 1962, McNally graduated from the local high school, and in 1967 received a Bachelor of Science degree from Memphis State University . McNally graduated from the University of Tennessee's College of Pharmacy with a Masters of Pharmacy in 1969 . During his studies, Randy McNally worked as a pharmacist at Walgreens . From 1978 he was employed at the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge.

Randy McNally is married and has two grown daughters. He is a member of the Roman Catholic Church and lives in Oak Ridge.

Political career

From January 9, 1979, McNally was a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives . During his time in the House of Representatives, McNally was involved in the so-called Operation Rocky Top , in which he covertly exposed corruption in the administration of the state of Tennessee for the Federal Bureau of Investigation . The operation became public in January 1989. McNally has served in the Tennessee Senate continuously since January 13, 1987 . There he represents the 5th constituency, which includes Anderson County , Loudon County and parts of Knox County .

In 2007, Randy McNally ran for the first time as a candidate for the election of lieutenant governor in Tennessee, but there he already lost in the party primary against Ron Ramsey , who was ultimately elected lieutenant governor. For the 2016 election, McNally ran again as a candidate for election to lieutenant governor, this time successfully. Randy McNally took office on January 10, 2017, succeeding Ron Ramsey, who had retired from politics.
