Ernest Pillow

Ernest Pillow (born May 14, 1856 in Marshall County , Tennessee , †  June 8, 1904 in Nashville , Tennessee) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1897, as President of the State Senate, he was the de facto lieutenant governor of the state of Tennessee, although this office was not formally introduced until 1951.

Career

After studying law and being admitted to the bar, Ernest Pillow began working in the profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1885 and 1889 he was a federal attorney for the middle district of Tennessee.

In 1895 he became a member and president of the State Senate for two years. So he was Deputy Governor Peter Turney and de facto lieutenant governor of Tennessee. This office was or is constitutionally anchored in most other states; in Tennessee this has only been the case since 1951. He died of cirrhosis of the liver in Nashville on June 8, 1904, after previously suffering from an alcohol problem.
