Albert F. Officer

Albert F. Officer ( May 11, 1899April 6, 1965 ) was an American politician . Between 1933 and 1935, as President of the State Senate, he was the de facto lieutenant governor of the state of Tennessee , even though this office was not formally introduced until 1951.

Career

Albert Officer was the son of William Officer (1872-1932), a judge and newspaper editor. He later also worked in the newspaper industry. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He was mayor of Livingston City in Overton County . For two consecutive terms he was elected to the Tennessee Senate, where he took the chair in 1933.

In his capacity as President of the Senate, he was deputy to Governor Hill McAlister . He thus actually held the office of lieutenant governor. This post was or is constitutionally anchored in most other states; in Tennessee this has only been the case since 1951. After his time in the State Senate, he was no longer politically active. He died on April 6, 1965.
